Verona (Veneto) - The Italian city that I consider my first Italian “home”. Spending a summer living there before moving to Portland, OR, every visit since makes my heart so full. An absolutely lovely place so rich in history, and makes for an easy commute to so many other Italian cities and wine regions. The Ponte Pietra bridge, pictured above, is the oldest bridge in Verona, originally completed in 100 BC. In 1945, retreating German forces blew up four of its five arches. Verona later rebuilt it by recovering the original stones and bricks from the riverbed, numbering them, and putting them back in place, creating one of Europe’s most faithful postwar restorations.
